I was so very sad to learn of the death of my old friend Don Berryman. You’ll be forever in my heart Don.

John Hannah was another great friend and though some news article says he went to a different high school he was at Nelson High School with me, we were both on the track team and used to hang out at the Middle Earth Coffee House between Nelson and the community center. We both ran in one of those miles for millions together, I’ll never forget the good times we had. Carol

What a great website! I loved this band growing up and went to hear them as often as possible. I always looked up to Lennie. Loved his playing and vibe. And the horns, such an inspiration! Thought I was going to loose it when they added the choreography. Outstanding! Thanks for the care and effort you put into this. Such a great tribute to a great band.

I remember you & John from the Southmount band including the record the band made with John's cornet solo song. I knew that you & John were in The Brass Union but hadn't yet seen the band. I somehow got invited to a small gathering at Drew Smith's house one night. You were there as was John & his then girlfriend Marilyn Griffith & Cindy Harper. Someone had brought the first Blood, Sweat & Tears album. As a new trumpet player I was blown away by the brass and innocently announced that "Hey you guys should play this stuff!". There was a round of laughter followed by the comment "They do!". Sad news indeed about John.

I remember you, Mike. Yes, very sad about John. I was playing in another 8-piece horn band with him when we lost him. Drew Smith married Cindy Harper, but sadly lost her to cancer about 25 years ago now. Marilyn and her husband still live in the area and run a beautiful country gift shop and tea room from their farm. John and I have stayed good friends with her all through the years. Good to hear from you, Mike and I shall assume that you're enjoying life out in beautiful B.C.

Thanks for the update Don. I had no idea that Drew & Cindy were a couple. A beautiful lady who I had a crush on.Marilyn used to ride the same school bus in the morning. Once she saw that I had a cornet with me she always sat with me. She was always kind to me. Yes I'm enjoying life on Quadra Island. It's like rolling back the clock here. Lots of folks from the Woodstock set settled here. A career in the military left me in rough shape so this is the perfect place for me to be. If you see Marilyn please say hello for me.

June 30 2016 at a party this evening and talking about great music from the 60's and I told about this band my wife and I watched on Friday nights at the Serbian Hall on Barton Street in Hamilton. We knew them as The Brass Union and a friend at the party brought up this web site. I was in awe. Wait till I show my wife this site in the morning. We will be married 50 years on Oct 6 2016 and we often mention the music we loved that we knew as the Brass Union. What also came as a surprise is that we never new John Willett as we share the same family history. Hard to believe. They were just so amazing and we often wondered where they ended up and now we know. Thank you for this web site, it will be a favourite for sure.

(18) John Hannah's 'day job' was already with the Brass Union but he couldn't pass on a jam. Along with John, Terry Bramhall, Maurice Bourrassa, Dave Street, Bernie Labarge and Jerry Hortichuk were some of those who jammed at the Middle Earth Coffee House by Nelson High School back in '68-'69.

Every time I hear Beck's Bolero, it takes me back. Thanks, John

Loved the Brass Union, great band. I went to Nelson High and was good friends with John Hannah back in the day. I just found out he had passed away many years ago now. He was a great guy and I am very sad to learn of his passing.

'Stumbled' on this site, and what memories. Grew up in Burlington, saw the Brass Union several times, bought the record ' RESTUARANT ENCOUNTER" ( probably bought it a PETERS PLATTERS?) and think it's a classic garage rock song with incredible lyrics.

Brought back many memories of other Burlington groups such as RISING SONS, RAGGED EDGES, COACHMEN.. etc

Wow, what detail on this carefully crafted site .

Every time I visit this site, I re-live every moment you describe (at least the ones I didn't live the first time)

Went to Aldershot High School in the late 60's and thought the Brass Union was the best band in the world. Did know many of you. You were the biggest influence to me for choosing to go in a Show Band in the 70's out of Hamilton called Coulson or Coulson brothers. (Jack still plays in area) Travelled all of Canada for 9 years. Went on my own in Toronto Piano Bars for many years after that. Remember the publicity shot on the Cochran's front yard on North Shore Blvd. Ran into Paul Goodrow several years ago on my way to Florida. It's good to know you are all doing well.
