Credit where credit’s due
First, I’d like to acknowledge the following band members and individuals, as this was very much a 'group effort':
Cliff Hunt: Probably more so than anyone except myself, Cliff is responsible for the creation of this story. Cliff supplied the
four McMaster University recordings of the band, posted on the opening page and elsewhere in the story. He was a wealth
of information – helping me track down band members (some from 40 years ago), giving me different stories of the guys (his
quotes are found throughout the pages), different ideas on things to try in the story – but most of all, he would send e-mails
during times when ‘writer’s block’ would set in, relating some story from long ago that would stir up the process again. Just
like he was back during the band years, and I expect in his professional life as well, he was the strong, silent, ‘driving force’
that wouldn’t let something good go unfinished.
Darrell Nameth: There were a number of leaders in the Brass Union, but Darrell was the one I knew personally. He was
the one who told me I had been ‘hired’ that night in Pillar Square, took me by the hand (figuratively) and led me through the
world of bands and rock music when I was very much a child, and as I researched this story, he was whom I turned to again.
He had the information about the band, it’s break-up, who went where and did what and he dug up the working script of the
Fairytale so I could tell the story of something that I had mostly forgotten. He was the one who found cassette tapes of the
band, converted them to digital and circulated them amongst the band members by e-mail as I wrote this story, thus creating
‘interest’ and making my job so much easier. As it was during the band years, if I had a question, it was to Darrell that I
turned.
Dave Balan: Dave got the ball rolling for me, and indirectly set up the format of how I was going to tell the story. He had all
the old Hulse’s Heroes pictures, the Aldershot High Yearbook, and many of the original Brass Union posters, early records
and other material. By the time I finished sitting with Dave in his home about a year ago, and came home and scanned the
material that he lent me, I knew what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it.
Bruce Wilson: Before I had written anything, really, Bruce had the two sides of the Brass Union 45 rpm record converted
to digital mp3 files for me to include in the story. I was because of this that I realized that this story would have to include
music on each page.
Terry Bramhall: Terry had two scrapbooks that I borrowed – “Terry, they’re still here in my filing cabinet when you’re in
town!” Through these, came a huge amount of pictures, promo and other material to add to the story. He had the original
CKOC Top 40 charts, all the write-ups about the Bobby Sherman C.N.E. gig, different newspaper clips and stories about the
band. From 1970 on, most of the pictures and clippings in the story have come from Terry’s scrapbooks.
Bill Hughes: Once Bill Hughes came on board the project, things started happening. A couple of the members got
together, e-mails started to circulate amongst the members and talk began of the first full band reunion. We’ll leave the
results of that alone for the time being.
Terri Citroen: Terri came on board the band with Dick early on and talking with her recently yielded some excellent stories
and insights into the early years of the band – especially her recollection of the late Dave Baylis.
George Hamor: I’d like to thank George for supplying the only pictures of the band from the Quebec City trips.
Everyone associated with the band deserves a special mention for their help as I gathered information for the story and the
ease with which I was able to compile the “Where Are They Now” section. The interviews were effortless.
